Brazilian lyric tenor Matheus Pompeu was nominated for the International Opera Awards 2019 for his recording of Halka by S. Moniuszko with Fabio Biondi and Europa Galante. He has been developing a solid career in Europe and Brazil, performing on prestigious stages including the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg, Palau de les Arts in Valencia, Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, Theater an der Wien, Opera Narodowa, and Theatro Municipal in Rio de Janeiro. Matheus has been recognised by critics for the beauty of his timbre, expressiveness of his singing, and the solidity of his technique. 

Matheus has interpreted main roles including: Alfredo in La Traviata, Il Duca di Mantova in Rigoletto, Gustavo in Un Ballo in Maschera, Corrado in Il Corsaro, and Ismaele in Nabucco by G. Verdi. Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly and Rodolfo in La Bohème by G. Puccini. Jontek in Halka and Franek in Flis by S. Moniuszko. In the symphonic repertoire, highlights include the Petite Messe Solennelle by G. Rossini, Misa Solemnis op. 123 and Symphony No. 9 "Choral" by L.V. Beethoven, and the Stabat Mater by A. Dvořák.

Matheus has established fruitful collaborations with eminent conductors through his 10-year career, including Fabio Biondi, Michele Spotti, Fabio Mechetti, José Maria Moreno, and Luis Fernando Malheiro; and with important stage directors such as Emilio Sagi, Sergio Vela, and André Heller-Lopes.

His discography includes four albums of complete operas in collaboration with the Chopin Institute of Warsaw and Maestro Fabio Biondi and Europa Galante: Il Corsaro by G. Verdi (2019); Paria (2023), Flis (2019), and Halka (2018) by S. Moniuszko. He collaborated with the prestigious Italian ensemble on various other occasions, and has performed in various programs at festivals in Germany, Austria, Spain, Poland, and Italy.

Born in 1987 in Três Corações, Brazil, Matheus graduated in Journalism from the Pontifical Catholic University of Minas Gerais. In 2008, he began his musical and vocal studies with Mauro Chantal at the School of Music of UFMG. He was later a student of Isabel Maresca and joined the first class of the Opera Studio of the Municipal Theatre of São Paulo. In 2015, he made his professional debut at the Theatro São Pedro as Flaminio, in the first Latin American representation of the opera L'Amore dei Tre Re by I. Montemezzi, under the baton of Maestro Luis Fernando Malheiro and stage direction of Sergio Vela. In the same year, he won first place in the VIII Carlos Gomes Competition in Campinas and was doubly awarded at the V Concorso Internazionale Marcello Giordani in Sicily. In 2016, he portrayed Don Alvaro in Il Guarany by Carlos Gomes at the Palácio das Artes in Belo Horizonte. In 2017, Matheus permanently moved to Europe, completing his training at the Centre de Perfeccionament Placido Domingo in Valencia, where he was instructed by Jaume Aragall, Placido Domingo, Mariella Devia, Davide Livermoore, Alejandro Zabala, and Enedina Lloris.

Matheus Pompeu won the 4th International Adam Didur Opera Singers Competition in Poland and was also awarded with the Carlos Gomes Medal of cultural merit in Brazil for his significant contribution to the field of music and culture.

1987 Born in Três Corações, Minas Gerais, Brazil, on December 28th.

2008 Moves to the capital of the region, Belo Horizonte, where he begins his singing studies with Mauro Chantal at the Federal University of Minas Gerais, Brazil.

2011 Invited by Lucca Targetti to audition at Teatro alla Scala in Milan, Italy.

2013 Vocal and piano recital in Três Corações, his hometown. ○ Wins the IV Young Soloists Competition of the Minas Gerais Symphony Orchestra. ○ Recital commemorating the 200th anniversary of G. Verdi at Sesi Minas, in Belo Horizonte, Brazil.

2014 Moves to São Paulo where he begins regular studies with the late professor Isabel Maresca and joins the first class of the Opera Studio at Theatro Municipal de São Paulo.

2015 Professional debut as Flaminio in the opera "L'Amore dei Tre Re" by I. Montemezzi, at Theatro São Pedro, Brazil. Portrays Maestro di Ballo in "Manon Lescaut" by G. Puccini, at Theatro Municipal de São Paulo (Opera Studio). Wins 1st place in the VIII Carlos Gomes Competition, in Campinas, Brazil. Portrays Normanno in "Lucia di Lammermoor" at Palácio das Artes in Belo Horizonte. Winner of the Salvatore Licitra and Vero Beach Opera Awards at the V Concorso Internazionale Marcello Giordani, in Sicily. Debuts as Tamino at Theatro Municipal de São Paulo (Opera Studio).

2016 Debuts as Rodolfo in "La Bohème" by G. Puccini, with the Brazilian Short Opera Company touring the state of São Paulo. Gala "Carlos Gomes, 180 years" with the Campinas Symphony Orchestra. Portrays Don Alvaro in "Il Guarany" by Carlos Gomes, in Belo Horizonte.

TIMELINE - Europe

2017 Permanently moves to Europe and becomes part of the Centre de Perfeccionament Placido Domingo in Valencia, Spain. There, he meets the renowned Italian conductor and violinist Fabio Biondi with whom he collaborates on several occasions. Debuts at Palau de Les Arts in Valencia under Biondi's baton with the original version of the Petite Messe Solennelle by G. Rossini.Don Carlo, G. Verdi, Palau de les Arts (Centre de Perfeccionament).

2018 Performs Beethoven's Ninth Symphony with the Minas Gerais Philharmonic Orchestra, Brazil. Covers tenor Michael Fabiano in "Il Corsaro" by G. Verdi at Palau de les Arts (Centre de Perfeccionament). Debut in Poland; CD recording of the opera Halka by S. Moniuszko, with Fabio Biondi and Europa Galante, at the Chopin and his Europe Festival in Warsaw. Debut in Germany at the Bremen Musikfest with the orchestral version of Petite Messe Solennelle by G. Rossini, with Fabio Biondi and Europa Galante.

2019 Handel's Messiah in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and at the Teatro de la Maestranza in Seville, Spain. Debuts as Il Duca di Mantova in "Rigoletto" by G. Verdi at the Mecklenburg State Theatre, Germany. Chopin and his Europe Festival – CD recording of the operas "Flis" by S. Moniuszko and "Il Corsaro" (title role) by G. Verdi, with Fabio Biondi and Europa Galante. Debut at the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg in "Il Ritorno d'Ulisse in Patria" by C. Monteverdi, with Fabio Biondi and Europa Galante.
